The Sanctum House Project will employ volunteer design teams to use trauma-informed design to renovate homes for female survivors of human trafficking. This project will allow the non-profit Sanctum House to triple its capacity from 1 to 3 buildings across the several-acre campus in Novi to be able to house and provide residential services for over 30 women. These services, including healthcare, professional services (trauma-informed therapy, substance abuse recovery resources, legal aid, vocational training, other therapies), education, and reintegration, aim to provide a place for these women to heal and rebuild.

Trauma-informed Design
Trauma is pervasive among women survivors of human trafficking and can lead to lifelong physical and mental health consequences. It not only can have a lasting impact on the body and brain, but also, if left unaddressed, can negatively impact resident and community success.

Trauma-informed design can help build resilience and be an effective way to recover and heal. It has been tested and proven to strengthen outcomes in healthcare and education, but it has not been fully embraced in affordable rental housing.
